General Information
Bonefishing is the mainstay of fishing Turneffe and the Atoll is home to the finest wadeable flats in Belize, only a short boat ride from the Lodge. Anglers can sight-fish large schools of tailing bonefish all day. There are also smaller schools of medium-sized bones and occasional large “cruisers” in the 5-pound-plus range. The bonefishing is consistently good throughout the year and offers something for anglers of all experience levels.
The Atoll is also home to an exceptional population of elusive and difficult permit, making it one of a select group of saltwater destinations where you can experience the excitement of flats fishing for permit throughout the year, either from a skiff or while wading the ocean-side flats.
Finally, anglers can catch small, resident tarpon among creeks, channels, and lagoons of the Atoll throughout the year. June through August are generally the best months for tarpon fishing, as this is the season when most of the migratory fish in the 70 to 150-pound range pass through.
Boats and Equipment
Guides fish from 16-foot Dolphin super skiffs. The lodge offers top-of-the-line rental gear and equipment from Sage, Hatch Reels, Simms, and Patagonia, and sells a full range of flies, leaders, tippet, and fly lines in the well-stocked fly shop.

"The trip couldn’t have been better. We fished a lot and caught a lot. So many bone fish I can’t even count. I went 3/4 on tarpon. Leader landed 130# and 80# and got to hold this 30# fish and broke one off close to the boat so damn near 4 for 4!! All the folks at the lodge are great along with some epic company as far as guests go!! Great trip and we will surely go back!" - Scott B.
"I am truly amazed at how good the guides are at adapting to my needs and how much fun they are to fish with . Their insights and humor go a long way . No pressure - just fun." - Jim T.
“Great experience. First time for me on the flats and my son was brand new also. I would go back in a heartbeat and plan on it next year. Turneffe Flats is a perfect set up for families who want to fish but want to do other activities as well. The Atoll adventure with daily fishing made everyone happy in my family.” – Jim A.
“It was my first trip to Belize, and my first experience fishing for bonefish. Wading the flats was a magical experience, and i caught fish as well!” – Patricia
“Awesome destination for novice and experienced. Easy of travel from the SE-US makes this a no-brainer. Lodge is well appointed and has a very friendly and accommodating staff. Would recommend this location to anyone that is looking to catch Bonefish in numbers and have shots on Permit. Can not comment on the Tarpon, as both trips to Turneffe Flats have been outside of Tarpon Migration Season.” – Jason V.
“I went as my “70” Birthday present to myself. I was not disappointed a bit in any aspect. “Ya Mon” I’d go back.” – John V.
"Far exceeded our expectations. The lodge was beautiful, the service was amazing and the food was fresh and delicious. The diversity of fishing at Turneffe is top notch, and despite very windy and difficult fishing conditions, I was on fish all week and hooked or caught every type of species on I had hoped. 100% plan on returning to Turneffe Flats. We even went through a family emergency at home on our last day and the lodge staff acted like family to us and was so supportive and accommodating.” – Scott W.
“Overall, Turneffe Flats Lodge exceeded my expectations. The outfit is very well organized, grounds are prettier than they had to be, it was painless getting from the airport to the atoll. This was my first real immersion in saltwater flats/mangrove fishing, and though I was easily pleased, it also exceeded my expectations. I didn’t expect catching bonefish to become routine so quickly. I hooked resident tarpon that quickly got off — I’ll have to get better at setting the hook on these guys — and had enough shots at permit. Never did see any decent sized snook, which would have made for greater variety. The location and overall environment, with only two lodges on a 10×30 mile atoll, made for a great getaway.” – Nick F.
“First time bonefishing and had a great experience. Learned a lot and looking forward to heading back to catch a permit. I had a couple shots but didn’t devote enough time to make it happen. Bonefish kept getting in the way! Great time at a great lodge. We were originally scheduled to fish 3 days and do the Atoll adventure 3 days but Craig was able to get us a 4th fishing day at a reasonable upgrade. Snorkeling was absolutely amazing. Cant wait to go back next year!” – David Z.
“The fishing was as advertised. During the day we chased permit from the boat and our favorite walk and wading and had an excellent time. Permit were around and willing to eat so when never got a chance to fish for the Tarpon which will have to wait until the next trip. The atoll has large number of areas to fish and most days we hardly saw another boat. In the evening we chased bonefish from in front of the lodge until sundown. The rest of the evening we were well looked after by the lodge staff who were extremely friendly. The drinks were good and the meals excellent. Overall an excellent trip.” – Troy B.
“The fishing was as good as I expected, but the non-fishing aspects were beyond my hopes. My wife is not a regular angler (first time on salt) and she had a great time (yes, she caught 11 bonefish). She wants to go back as much as I do, and we are already booked.” – Brian B.
“Always a good time at Turneffe Flats. Interesting people and a beautiful environment.” – Michael M.
“AWESOME and relaxing. Caught Tarpon, Bones, Permit, guild was great. The lodge was great.” – Matthew B.
“We had a great time. My wife caught her first Bonefish (several) on the fly, and I caught my first Permit on the fly, my wife was in the boat with me, which made it even more special. The staff was attentive and gracious, and I especially enjoyed meeting Craig and briefly learning more about the Turneffe Atoll Trust.” – Jim C.
“Great operation, great lodge, excellent service, lots of shots at permit, tarpon, and bones. Best wading I have ever done. Love the remote location.” – Peter M.
