On your departure day from Turneffe, schedule a flight out of Belize City after 11:30 AM, as there is no guarantee that you will be back at the airport before 10:00 AM that morning (The transfer boat typically leaves the lodge at 7:30 AM and arrives at the dock in Belize City at approximately 9:00 to 9:30 AM).

General Information
Bonefish are the mainstay of fishing Turneffe Island Resort as the atoll is home to the finest wadeable flats in all of Belize. The area’s large ocean-side flats are only five to ten minutes from the lodge by boat where anglers can sight-fish to large schools of tailing bonefish at all hours of the day. There are also smaller schools of medium-sized bones and occasional large “cruisers” in the five-plus range. The bonefishing is consistently good throughout the year and for anglers of all experience levels. Novice saltwater anglers can expect to see hundreds of bonefish over the course of a week, a scenario that provides a great opportunity to learn the intricacies and nuances of flats fishing. Experienced saltwater anglers will find plenty of challenging fishing and opportunities to cast to large bonefish.
As far as permit fishing goes, the atoll is home to an exceptional population of these elusive and difficult fish. Turneffe is among a select group of saltwater destinations where you can experience the excitement of flats fishing for permit throughout the year, either from a skiff or while wading the ocean-side flats. Anglers serious about chasing these fish can expect numerous shots at 10 to 20-pound permit and occasional shots at fish in the 20 to 35-pound class. As for tarpon, anglers can catch small, resident tarpon that inhabits the creeks, channels, and lagoons of the atoll throughout the year. Fishing for the larger, migratory tarpon begins in April and continues through mid-September. June through August are generally the best months for tarpon fishing, as this is the season when most of the migratory fish in the 70 to 150-pound range pass through.
Boats and Equipment
Guides fish from 16-foot Dolphin super skiffs with lean bars. The lodge offers top-of-the-line rental gear and equipment and sells a full range of flies, leaders, and tippet in the well-stocked fly shop.
