During early February 2025, I was able to pull off a last-minute trip to the Ascension Bay region of Mexico. Ascension Bay is a beautiful and quant area of Mexico know for it’s world class fishing and small local communities. Although we recommend anglers book far in advance, this location also offers a great opportunity for last-minute, spur of the moment trips. Since this was my first trip down to Ascension Bay, I was able to visit and experience 5 lodges located in Punta Allen as well as fish with a lodge north of Cancun. Throughout my travels, I compiled a list of 10 things to keep in mind when traveling to Ascension Bay for the first time.
1. When traveling; Always be prepared to experience travel delays along the way.
When I traveled to Cancun from Montana in February, I encountered flight delays and unexpected reroutes. In such situations, it’s essential to communicate with your airline’s gate agents and customer service representatives—they share your goal of reaching your destination and will do their best to assist you. Travel delays, layovers, and the remote nature of certain locations can often extend your journey, so it's wise to build extra time into your schedule and approach the experience with patience.
2. Pack a set of clothes and flyfishing essentials in a carry-on bag.
Due to my flight reroutes and delays while flying to Cancun, my checked luggage was delayed a couple of days. While we always expect our checked bags to arrive on time and to our destination, there's always a chance they could be delayed or not arrive with you. By packing an extra set of clothing, fly rods, reels, and essential gear in your carry-on, you ensure that you're ready to fish as soon as you land, no matter what. Be sure to file a claim with your airline on arrival and they will do everything they can to get you your luggage on time.
3. If you are traveling to additional hotels or other locations on your fishing trip – have a list of contact info on hand and ready.
In remote areas like Ascension Bay, cellphone service can be unreliable or limited. Carrying a list of lodge addresses, local lodge phone numbers, and emergency contact information can be invaluable. When I was traveling from lodge to lodge, having this information on hand allowed lodge staff to assist me in reaching my next destination without relying on my phone. Being prepared with these details ensures smoother travel and added peace of mind in case of connectivity issues.
4. Driving distances can be longer than expected.
There is no sugar coating it - the roads around Ascension Bay are often unpaved and can be very bumpy and rough. Driving distances may feel longer due to the terrain, so be prepared for a bumpy ride. Bring snacks, water, and entertainment for the journey, and keep a flexible attitude about arrival times.
5. Lodge staff members and guides are wonderful. Get to know them!
The people around Ascension Bay are incredibly welcoming and eager to share their culture. Taking the time to connect—whether through a conversation with a local guide or learning about the area's history—can greatly enrich your experience. During my visit, everyone I met was exceptionally friendly, making me feel at home. These meaningful interactions not only enhanced my trip but also led to friendships that will last for years to come.
6. Pack a well vetted fly selection.
Ascension Bay offers a diverse selection of fish species, making a well-rounded fly selection essential for a successful trip. While some lodges provide rod and reel rentals, it’s expected that you bring your own flies. A balanced mix of patterns designed for bonefish, permit, tarpon, and other local species ensures you're prepared for any situation. I received great advice from the Yellow Dog travel team and the Flyshop team, who not only helped tailor my fly selection but also saved me money by avoiding unnecessary purchases. Don’t skip this crucial step—it made all the difference for me!
7. Pack sandals that have loose straps or can slip on your feet!
The warm, sandy conditions of Ascension Bay make comfortable footwear a must, and sandals with adjustable straps or slip on are essential. In the heat, your feet may swell, and sand can easily get trapped, so having a design that allows flexibility will keep you comfortable throughout the day. As a solo angler, I found that my feet were sore after long days on the water. Packing my Crocs was a game-changer—by the end of the day, slipping into my Chacos was a challenge! Choosing the right footwear can make all the difference in staying comfortable during your trip.
8. Practice your casting
Casting in the wind and across the flats can be challenging, especially with a fly rod. Before your trip, take time to practice both accuracy and distance, focusing on developing a quick, smooth stroke. A few dedicated practice sessions can significantly improve your success on the water. I faced some particularly windy days and quickly realized I should have practiced more before arriving. Proper preparation will help you adapt to the conditions and make the most of your fishing experience.
9. Practice your Spanish
While many people in Ascension Bay speak some English, learning a few key Spanish phrases can enhance your experience and help you communicate more effectively with locals and guides. I didn’t know much Spanish when I arrived, but I picked up quite a bit just by chatting with my guides and lodge staff. Don’t be afraid to try—locals often appreciate the effort, and it can make your interactions even more rewarding.
10. Be flexible and enjoy the experience!
Things don’t always go as planned—whether it's shifting weather, travel delays, or last-minute itinerary changes. Embrace the unpredictability, stay positive, and go with the flow. These unexpected moments often turn into the most memorable parts of your adventure—they certainly did for me!
Traveling to Ascension Bay for the first time was an incredible experience, filled with both challenges and rewarding moments. While no trip goes perfectly according to plan, being prepared, staying flexible, and embracing the adventure made all the difference.
