PACK THE KIDS AND LET’S GO
Run through the checklist for your next family vacation. Warm locale. Activities for the kids. Near the water (of course). Solid food options. Quality beverages. Empty beaches to relax on. A bit of adventure, a bit of R&R. And, of course, opportunities to chase after a few fish.
In the past few weeks, we've outlined our favorite family locations in the Bahamas and in Belize. If you’re looking for a different location in the saltwater, here are a few more of our favorites in the Yucatan and Costa Rica:
Grand Slam Lodge (Ascension Bay, Yucatan)
This newer Yucatan lodge operation – the nicest and most modern in the area - is situated on a beautiful beach near the small fishing village of Punta Allen. It is the only lodge in the area with a pool, which overlooks the ocean. You will start each morning by walking out of your front door and stepping into your fishing boat. Not many fishing-focused destinations in the Caribbean offer a high level of comfort and accommodations that Grand Slam presents to guests.
We can tell you that this is not your typical fishing lodge when it comes to accommodations! The rooms are spacious, and each features a huge private bathroom, spa-quality jet bath, large waterfall-style shower, thermostat-controlled A/C, in-room phone, 46" flat-screen TV with local cable access, DVD player, iPod dock, and spacious sitting area. The guides communicate very well and are true professionals. They all know the Ascension Bay fishery and where to find all the varied species (bonefish, snook, tarpon and snook). We also offer combination trips with Grand Slam and a few upscale, all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen!
Playa Blanca (Ascension Bay, Yucatan)
Playa Blanca is a remote, private, and secluded "adventure-eco-fishing" resort that offers the same high-caliber fishing program as its famous sister lodge, Casa Blanca. This is a slightly more luxurious beach resort perfect for families or couples looking for the ideal private Caribbean getaway. Anglers staying at Playa Blanca have near-exclusive access to both Espiritu Santo Bay and the vast Santa Rosa Lagoon system, home to large numbers of bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and other shallow-water species. This area receives very little pressure, making it the ideal destination for anglers who prefer fishing in solitude. The pristine, white sandy beach overlooks a calm bay perfect for swimming, beachcombing, and sea kayaking.
Crocodile Bay Lodge – Costa Rica
The fishing at Crocodile Bay Resort is world-class, with catch and release fishing in the Pacific Ocean for sailfish, striped, blue and black marlin, Dorado, tuna, and wahoo. You also have access to Costa Rica's Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf) for roosterfish, cubera snapper, Jack Crevalle, bluefin trevally, sierra mackerel, tripletail, and grouper. Crocodile Bay Resort is Costa Rica’s finest sport fishing and eco-tour destination. The resort is situated on 44 acres of lush, tropical gardens with 44 air-conditioned rooms in Puerto Jimenez, on Costa Rica's South Pacific Coast. The rooms at Crocodile Bay are a major step up from the screened-in, open-air fishing, and jungle lodges found at most resorts throughout the country. Crocodile Bay has a very nice swimming pool, a large, full-service spa, and 25+ different eco-tour activities, making it a perfect destination for anglers and non-anglers alike.
While these three trips are our favorites, as they are consistent in delivering exceptional experiences for the family, we do have an entire list of family fly fishing trips that may better suit you and your specific needs!
