In a perfect world, we would all spend our year globetrotting the world, heading from one fishery to the next and chasing warm weather. While that reality may seem far off, the least we can do is provide you with the information to ensure whenever you are thinking of angling abroad, you have the best options at your disposal all year long. The following guide is a month-to-month index of fisheries at their best for destination fly fishing, allowing you to better plan your next trip abroad, even before the last one ends.
A special note: Destinations during "peak season" are always in demand, and we cannot underscore the importance of booking your trip in advance (sometimes a year or more)! We can always find a good alternative when anglers call in hoping to book a trip on short notice, but "prime" dates are not always available. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, there are numerous year-round fisheries that can provide anglers with a great experience at any month of the year!
January
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Sight fishing large brown trout in New Zealand
- Tierra del Fuego for sea-run brown trout
- Fly fishing in Patagonia for rainbow, brook, and brown trout
- Golden Dorado fishing in Uruguay
Destinations such as Argentina, Chile, and New Zealand are hitting their peak in January as the Southern Hemisphere settles into summer. Terrestrial and dry fly fishing is on fire throughout Patagonia's rivers and lakes, and some areas are experiencing the incredibly exciting and productive damsel hatch. This is a great time to target both quantity and quality of fish, experience superb visual dry fly fishing, and experience the best of both walk and wade fishing and floats on larger rivers, subject to the fishery.
Across the globe, New Zealand is also experiencing peak conditions, as January and February historically produce the warmest and most stable weather conditions. For anglers hoping to hunt, stalk, and feed massive trout on a single dry fly, New Zealand in January is the place to be.
At the "End of the World," Tierra del Fuego is at its peak as flows level out and anglers from around the world venture to fish for massive sea-run brown trout that come into rivers like the infamous Rio Grande, though availability is challenging to come by during this time. Further north, the fishing in Jurassic Lake at this time is slightly more challenging than early/late season, though trophy fish are still there to be had.
This is an excellent time to travel to Uruguay for golden dorado, a destination that is not always recognized for both the quality and quantity of fish in its rivers and streams.

Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Trophy bonefish in the Bahamas
- Giant Trevally, triggerfish, Indo-permit, and more in the Indian Ocean
- Sailfish in Central America
There are a number of good saltwater options to choose from at the beginning of the year. The Caribbean is in play year-round, and January can be a great time to target larger bonefish in the Bahamas and Cuba or big snook on the flats of the Yucatan. This time of year sees low pressure throughout the Caribbean and conditions are generally favorable, though cold fronts are always possible. Further south, January is prime time for anglers looking to target sailfish and other pelagic species in Guatemala and Costa Rica.
This is also peak season for far off destinations like Alphonse, Cosmoledo, Christmas Island, Oman, and Australia, perfect for anglers hoping to pursue giant trevally, Indo-pacific permit, triggerfish, and much more.
February
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Terrestrial and dry fly fishing in Patagonia
- Sight fishing in New Zealand
- Golden dorado fishing in Uruguay
- Targeting 100-200 pound arapaima in Guyana
Fishing remains strong throughout the Southern Hemisphere in Patagonia and New Zealand as summer is still in full swing. Hoppers, ants, beetles, and damselflies continue to be very effective in Argentina and Chile, in addition to abundant mayfly and caddis hatches throughout much of the expansive region.
For the more adventurous, golden dorado fishing in portions of Argentina and Uruguay is good year-round, but especially during this time. Additionally, for the "extreme angler," the short fishing season in Guyana is open at this time for anglers hoping to land an arapaima on the fly. This program is not for everyone but is a unique option for experienced anglers seeking an immersive jungle and fishing adventure.
For Americans looking for a winter option nearby, this can be an excellent time to travel to Arkansas' White River in pursuit of trophy brown trout. For anglers who enjoy hunting big fish with big flies and don't mind bundling up, this is a great offering.
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Seychelles, Australia, and Christmas Island
- Targeting permit and bonefish in the Caribbean
February can offer excellent fishing conditions throughout the Yucatan, Cuba, the Bahamas, and Belize. Both bonefish and permit fishing can be productive throughout February, especially during spells of consistent warm weather and low wind. As the days inch closer to spring, conditions tend to become more predictable, and the quantity and quality of opportunities increase.
Fishing in the Seychelles is fantastic at this time, and in addition to Alphonse and Cosmoledo, Farquhar and Astove Atoll open up to travelers hoping to target giant trevally, bumphead parrotfish, and much more.
March
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Targeting large trout in the rivers and lakes of Patagonia
- Trophy rainbow fishing at Jurassic Lake
- Dorado fishing in Argentina
- Targeting late-season sea-run brown trout in Tierra del Fuego
March brings big changes for the Southern Hemisphere as summer transitions into fall. Dry fly fishing remains a viable option in Patagonia, but this is also an excellent time to target trophy fish on streamers. Anglers can expect an uptick in productivity in Jurassic Lake as temperatures cool and fish return to the shallows in greater numbers, while nymphing and streamer fishing produce some of the best fish of the year in Tierra del Fuego.
Elsewhere, March signals the beginning of trout fishing season in portions of Europe such as Ireland and Slovenia. While the weather may not be perfect, these fish won't have seen flies for many months!
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Permit fishing in the Yucatan, Belize, Cuba, and Honduras
- Large numbers of bonefish in the Bahamas
- Juvenile tarpon in the Northern Yucatan
March kicks off the busiest months for many lodges throughout the tropics!
Consistent weather in the tropics is the big draw throughout the spring, making for both accommodating and productive fishing. As water temperatures warm and winds become more favorable, permit fishing throughout the tropics heats up. This is generally a great time to be heading to portions of the Yucatan, Belize, Honduras, and Cuba in pursuit of permit on fly. Along the Northern Yucatan coast, many operators are ramping up guided juvenile tarpon fishing, meaning many of the area's resident fish haven't received pressure for some time. The beginning of spring also kicks off what is traditionally the best period for large numbers of bonefish across much of the Caribbean due to prevailing blue skies and an abundance of schools.

April
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Golden mahseer fishing in India and Bhutan
- Swinging for steelhead/salmon in Alaska and Canada
- Dorado fishing in Argentina
- Late-season trophy rainbows at Jurassic Lake
There are good general freshwater fishing opportunities to be had in April, but this is a transitional period for many fisheries. The southern hemisphere is firmly into fall, and much of the northern hemisphere's trout fisheries are pre-runoff.
For adventurous and experienced anglers, this is an excellent time to trek out in pursuit of golden mahseer, both in India and nearby Bhutan. Additionally, this is a prime window for swinging the prolific steelhead runs of Alaska's Tongass National Forest and the famed rivers of British Columbia for steelhead and Atlantic salmon. These programs are always in high demand, so interested anglers will need to inquire and book well in advance!
If conditions line up, Spring can be a good time in the U.S. West, with blue-winged olives, midges, and Mother's Day caddis hatches all in play. The risk is that a spell of warm weather could make rivers high and muddy, or extended winter conditions will limit opportunities. Consider focusing on lodges with area spring creeks, with strong BWO and midge hatches. Also in transition, trout fishing can be great in Patagonia or New Zealand, but it will depend wholly on the weather -- If you're a streamer-focused angler, this could be a good option.
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Permit, bonefish, and tarpon in Belize, Yucatan, Cuba
- Bonefishing in the Bahamas
- Tarpon in the Yucatan
- The out-islands of the Seychelles & St. Brandon's Atoll
Permit fishing can be good year-round, but the consistent weather in the springtime makes it more productive. The most important factor of any good day of saltwater fishing is sunlight, as spotting camouflaged fish in cloudy conditions is a challenge for any guide. Consistent blue-bird days are common throughout April and May, and is why the demand for most lodges throughout the Caribbean is high. We strongly recommend booking out a year (or more) in advance for this period.
April also marks a time when much of the Seychellois atolls are open and fishing well, including Farquhar, Astove, and Providence in addition to Cosmoledo and Alphonse. Additionally, one of the most remote and unexplored fisheries in the world, April marks the start of St. Brandon's Atoll bi-annual season which extends from April to June and September through December.

May
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Brown trout and Arctic char in Iceland
- Steelhead in Tongass National Forest
- Trout fishing in Spain and Ireland
- Trout and Grayling in Slovenia
While early in the season, May is a good time for streamer fishing for massive resident brown trout in Iceland's lakes, as well as the last of the sea-run brown trout as they make their way back out to sea. Much of Europe's trout fisheries are coming into good shape in May as water levels stabilize and bug life becomes more abundant. This is also a particularly good time to target marble trout and grayling in Slovenia. In Spain, fish are very active in mid-to-late spring, and anglers can enjoy both the low-country flat rivers and small tributary streams, as well as superb dry fly fishing in the high mountain rivers.
The short steelhead season of Alaska's Tongass National Forest is in full "swing" come May, and if an angler has ever dreamed of landing a trophy steelhead, this program is the place to do it.
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Permit fishing in the Caribbean
- Migratory tarpon in Cuba, Belize, Mexico, and the Florida Keys
- Bonefish in the Bahamas and the remainder of the Caribbean
You can't go wrong with many destinations throughout the tropics in May -- Favorable weather conditions and consistently warm water temperatures mean fishing is on fire. Permit fishing is better in the warmer months, so May is a fantastic time to pursue the black-tailed devil in Belize, Mexico, most fisheries in Cuba, and parts of the Bahamas.
May also means the arrival of the annual tarpon migration. While there is no hard date on their arrival with some fish showing up in April, May is when more fish enter the system. If you want a world-class migratory tarpon fishing experience, May and June in Cuba is in a league of its own. Portions of Mexico and Belize also experience excellent migratory tarpon fishing around this period, specifically throughout the "Three Bays" of the Yucatan and Northern Belize. While not always thought of as a tarpon fishery, the annual migration provides opportunities in the Bahamas, especially around portions of Grand Bahama and Andros.
For anglers who want a grand slam on the fly, May's favorable weather patterns and large presence of all the "Big 3" make it ideal for pursuing a grand slam throughout Belize, Mexico, and Cuba.
June
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Dry fly fishing in the U.S. West and Canada
- Trout and salmon fishing in Alaska
- Atlantic salmon fishing in Ireland and Canada
Anglers are spoiled for choice for the next couple of months throughout North America. While early-to-mid June can be mixed in terms of weather and river conditions in the US West, the second half of June is a very exciting time. For anyone who enjoys dry fly fishing, this is the place to be as many of the best hatches of the year are kicking off or just around the corner. Fabled waters such as the Henry's Fork, Missouri River, Madison, Smith, Big Hole, and more are all primed for long-anticipated bug life, including PMDs, green drakes, golden stones, yellow sallies, and salmonflies. If you want to hit "peak fishing" in the US West, consider the last two weeks in June and the month of July to be some of the best fishing of the year.
June is considered early season in Alaska but provides anglers with a lot of angling diversity, where nymphs, dries, streamers, and skating mice are all in play. The region's rainbow trout are super aggressive once the fishing season opens after an extended window with limited food sources. Not only is there great tactical diversity in June, but anglers can also target King salmon, sockeye, pink, and chum salmon starting sometime in mid-June depending on the fishery.
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Permit fishing in the Caribbean
- Migratory tarpon in Cuba, Belize, Mexico, and the Florida Keys
- Roosterfish in Baja
June is generally one of the best fishing months of the year for much of the Caribbean with favorable conditions and an abundance of fish on the flats. This is one of the most in-demand times for Cuba as tons of migratory tarpon are found throughout the country but in greater numbers in Isla de la Juventud, Jardines de la Reina, and Cayo Largo. June is another great month for anglers hoping to try their hand at landing a grand slam!
The summer months are peak season for targeting roosterfish on fly in Baja, one of the most aggressive and powerful species out there. In addition to roosterfish, dorado, jacks, and striped marlin are also a real possibility. This is an excellent program for committed anglers with non-angling companions!
July
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Dry fly fishing in the U.S. West and Canada
- Trout and salmon fishing in Alaska
- Golden Dorado in Bolivia
- Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and Arctic char in Iceland
- Trophy pike in Alaska
- Lake trout, pike, bull trout and more in Canada
July is a big month in the freshwater fly fishing world, with simply too many good options to choose from. Attractor dry fly fishing on the famed Yellowstone, PMDs on the Missouri, salmonfly hatches on the Madison, the largely untouched and expansive rivers of British Columbia... there are many lifetimes of excellent fishing opportunities at this time. July is also a notable month for Alaska, and the latter half of the month is considered to be the start of peak season: Feisty rainbow trout, silver salmon on streamers, and a major push of sockeye salmon into the river systems. There is also perhaps no better place in the world to target trophy pike than Alaska's Yukon Drainage in July. If you want to land a 40+ inch pike on fly, look no further.
Canada's northern fisheries have a limited fishing season due to their high latitudes, so July marks a special time throughout Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, and Ontario. These are off-the-grid destinations that are great options for both committed anglers and families looking for an overall incredible outdoor experience. These fisheries are very remote, and float planes and helicopters are employed to access the lodges and their fisheries. Due to the short nature of the fishing season and high demand, availability is often hard to come by and trips should be planned well in advance. Trophy lake trout, brook trout, northern pike, bull trout, grayling, and various other opportunities are available to interested anglers.
Finally, the height of Bolivia's golden dorado fishing season starts in July. Bolivia's fishing season revolves around the jungle's dry months, taking place between June and October. While water levels aren't entirely predictable, July is a safe bet for great sight fishing opportunities for golden dorado and pacu.
+ Bolivia Gear Guide: Everything You Need
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Roosterfish in Baja
- Permit and juvenile tarpon fishing in the Caribbean
- Migratory tarpon in portions of the Caribbean
July marks the beginning of "off" season for the Yucatan and other destinations in the Caribbean, though permit and tarpon fishing throughout Belize, Mexico, and Cuba is generally excellent in July, with both adult and juvenile tarpon available. Of note, the summer months are associated with increased levels of sargassum in portions of the Yucatan and Belize. The sargassum acts as a refuge for crustaceans and can improve permit fishing under the right conditions.
While this time of year is part of the "rainy season," much of the rain occurs overnight or in passing squalls. July also remains an excellent option for any angler hoping to catch a grand slam, in addition to abundant jacks, barracuda, and snook in the backcountry.
For anglers looking for a budget-friendly option, many lodges in the tropics start offering discounted packages in the summer months. July is a great time to take advantage of some lower rates, while also having tons of fishing opportunities.
August
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Hoppers in the U.S. West
- Peak conditions for trout and silver salmon in Alaska
- Golden dorado in Bolivia
- Arctic char in Greenland
- Sea-run brown trout and Atlantic salmon in Iceland
- Trophy pike in Alaska
- Lake trout, pike, bull trout and more in Canada
- Taimen in Mongolia
Another month of some incredible freshwater fly fishing options. August is terrestrial season in the U.S. Rockies and a favorite time of year for many local and traveling anglers. This is an especially good time for families and non-anglers to join in on a fishing trip to enjoy fishing big foam flies in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and British Columbia.
Alaska's rivers are teeming with rainbow trout and silver salmon in Augsut as fish fatten up on eggs and salmon flesh from recent spawns. This time of year sees super high catch rates, and while bear sightings are common throughout the season, they are feeding heavily on salmon runs during July and August. This time of year is always in high demand.
For more adventurous anglers, streamer and topwater fishing for Arctic char is excellent in the remote rivers of Greenland. Far to the east, Mongolia's taimen season begins in June and extends through October, allowing a select few anglers to chase the largest salmonid in the world in some of the most remote and expansive countryside anywhere.
+ Alaska Gear Guide: Everything You Need
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Jungle Tarpon in Costa Rica
- Permit, bonefish, and tarpon fishing in the Caribbean
- Juvenile tarpon fishing along the Tarpon Coast
August is the opening month for portions of Costa Rica's tarpon fishery as massive tarpon migrate into the rivers and surrounding lagoons during the wet season. Fish in the 60 to 150+ pound range are targeted most often with sinking lines, but rolling fish can be found especially near creek mouths. This is a unique fishing experience, featuring all walks of wildlife including howler and spider monkeys, exotic birds, and even jaguars.
This is still a great time to target permit and tarpon throughout the Caribbean. Conditions are far more variable at this time of year and weather systems can have an impact, but we routinely see some of the largest tarpon and permit of the year caught in August. We always recommend trip insurance, but any trip booked to a Caribbean destination during hurricane season should come with travel insurance in the unlikely event a named storm impacts travel.

September
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Targeting trophy rainbows in Alaska
- Golden dorado in Bolivia
- Arapaima in Brazil
- Hoppers, dry flies, nymphing, and streamers in the U.S. Rockies
- Sea-run brown trout in Iceland
- Tigerfish in Tanzania
- Taimen in Mongolia
This is “trophy time” for big rainbows on an Alaska fly-fishing trip. This is an ideal time for anglers who are less concerned about quantity and are more interested in landing a once-in-a-lifetime rainbow trout – many reaching 30-plus inches! Colder temperatures and precipitation can be more prevalent, but the fall colors of Alaska are beautiful, and the scenery is always spectacular. Waters are less crowded as the summertime anglers have left, so fly fishing in Alaska in the fall is an intimate experience not to be missed.
September is a big month in Montana and surrounding states as signs of autumn creep in. Hoppers and other terrestrials remain staples on area rivers such as the Yellowstone, especially earlier in the month. As September wears on, many anglers start to focus on streamers, producing many of the year's largest fish. This is also a beautiful time of year to be out on the water and a favorite for many on the Yellow Dog team!
There are several options available for "hardcore anglers" in September, including taimen in Mongolia, tigerfish in Tanzania, arapaima in Brazil, and sight fishing to golden dorado in Bolivia's jungle.
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Jungle Tarpon in Costa Rica
-
Bonefish, Indo-Pacific permit, and trevally on St. Brandon's
September remains an excellent month to travel to Costa Rica for giant tarpon, or to St. Brandon's for some of the world's best bonefishing and unpressured permit flats.
In the tropics, September brings mixed and somewhat unreliable conditions. Like August, this is a time of year to take advantage of low fishing pressure while permit and tarpon fishing is often good. September and October are consistently the slowest months for fly fishing in the Caribbean, making it a great time for anyone looking to take advantage of trip specials.
October
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Tigerfish in Tanzania
- Golden mahseer in Bhutan
- Streamer fishing in the Rockies
- Arapaima in Guyana and Brazil
- Golden dorado in Argentina
As the northern hemisphere transitions to fall, much of the southern hemisphere's jungle fisheries are coming into their peak and one of the best times to target golden dorado in northern Argentina as warmer conditions and an abundance of prey creates ideal conditions. Additionally, adventurous angler can target arapaima in Guyana and Brazil, along with some limited opportunities for peacock bass, arowana, pacu, and more.
Tanzania's Mnyera and Ruhudji river systems offer a very limited number of anglers the opportunity to land one of fly fishing's most unique game species on fly -- the tigerfish. The season extends from August until mid-November, when increasing water temperatures and improved clarity lead to aggressive feeding from trophy tigerfish. This a bucket list trip for serious anglers, and with the season limited to 16 weeks a year and only 8 rods per week, we encourage anglers to inquire well in advance.
October is also widely regarded as the most exciting time to fish streamers for big trout throughout the U.S. West as water temperatures drop and brown trout prepare to spawn. October can bring mixed conditions, but is a good time for covering water and "hunting" big fish. This is a beautiful time in the U.S. West as snowcaps begin to form on the towering Rockies, and rivers become quieter and less trafficked.
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Fishing diversity in the Seychelles and Australia
- Low-pressured flats in the Caribbean
- Bull reds in Louisiana
- Indo-Pacific permit in Oman
As temperatures drop and water clarity improves in Louisiana, this kicks off what is traditionally the best period of time to sight fish to bull reds. Fishing poppers to massive, willing redfish is tough to beat, and American anglers don't have to travel far for this epic fishery.
Elsewhere, fishing can be excellent in the tropics barring storms, and pressure is at an all-time low after subsequent months of fewer anglers. If the weather is good, then so is the fishing.
For anglers wanting the best of the best during this time of year, Alphonse, St. Brandon's Atoll, the out-islands of the Seychelles, Oman, and Australia are easily the finest options. As the the tropics cool on our side of the world, fishing in the Indian Ocean is really taking off after an extended period of little to no pressure due to persistent winds during the summer months.
November
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Trophy rainbows at Jurassic Lake
- Golden dorado in Argentina
- Arapaima in Brazil and Guyana
- Peacock bass and payara in Brazil
November is a tricky month for many freshwater trout fisheries as those in the Northern Hemisphere transition into winter, and those in the Southern Hemisphere come into shape.
However, November and December are the most popular time for catching massive rainbows in the southern reaches of Argentina as absurd numbers of giant trout line the river banks and mouth of the Barrancoso River preparing to enter Jurassic Lake. It is common for anglers to hook over two dozen fish in a single day, with fish pushing well into the double digits. Availability is difficult to come by, so we strongly encourage you to inquire at least a year in advance. Elsewhere in South America, this is an excellent time to be in the jungle with plenty of options available, including fishing poppers for aggressive peacocks or prospecting with massive streamers for the world's largest freshwater scaled fish -- the arapaima
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Fishing diversity in the Seychelles and Australia
- Bull reds in Louisiana
- Sailfish in Guatemala
- Tarpon in Costa Rica
All of the out-islands of the Seychelles are fishing well in November, as well as St. Brandon's Atoll. Committed saltwater anglers able to travel to the Indian Ocean are spoiled for choice at this time, and there is no real limit to the possibilities and species to target on fly.
Stateside, November signals the final month of hurricane season and storms are becoming less frequent. Cooling water temperatures in the gulf bring reds onto the flats to feed aggressively, and improved water clarity makes this time of year peak season in Louisiana's marshes. While this is a busy time, the sheer vastness of its fishery means anglers will sometimes go a day or more without seeing other boats on the water.
December
Freshwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Trophy rainbows at Jurassic Lake
- Streamers and dry flies in Patagonia
- Dry fly fishing in New Zealand
- Golden dorado in Argentina
As we come full circle, Argentina and Chile are transitioning into their prime come mid-December. Early in the month can be slightly unpredictable due to runoff, but streamer fishing is excellent at this time and fish have seen no pressure for roughly half a year. As the month progresses, rivers come into shape and dry fly fishing is picking up. Availability at this time can be a little easier to come by compared to January and February while also producing excellent fishing and big fish. To the south, Jurassic Lake is in high demand and the fishing is as good as it gets.
New Zealand's fishery is also entering peak season come the end of the year. December doesn't always get as much attention as it should, but this can be an incredible time of year for dry fly enthusiasts eager to sight fish for the biggest trout of their life.
Saltwater
Best Fishing Opportunities:
- Fishing diversity in the Seychelles and Australia
- Bull reds in Louisiana
- Sailfish in Guatemala
- Big snook in the Yucatan
Saltwater opportunities in December are largely the same as November with some exceptions. December is entering the height of the Seychelles fishing season, and anglers eager to target giant trevally should be looking at Cosmoledo. Elsewhere, anglers hoping to land their first Indo-Pacific permit should be traveling to St. Brandon's, Australia, Poivre, Alphonse, Astove, or Oman.
The cooler months are also notable in the Yucatan as northerly winds push water out of the mangroves, forcing big snook onto the flats. Anglers can expect good bonefishing at this time, with permit and tarpon fishing largely dependent on the weather.
We always say the best time to travel is when you can! This guide is meant to provide our travelers with a resource for better planning their dream trip or nailing down what opportunities there are at any given time. Take note: Beyond the fisheries listed here, there are always other options available at any time of the year. The best thing you can do to gain a better understanding of what your options are for any time of year is to call the Yellow Dog office and speak with a program director!
