General Information
Grand Slam is one of the finest destinations in the Caribbean for anglers seeking the big three flats species: bones, permit, and tarpon. Whether you are seeking a well-balanced trip offering a diversity of flats species, or you want to focus on hunting permit, Grand Slam Lodge can accommodate your needs. At Grand Slam Lodge they put 2 trained captains in each boat – meaning both guides can pole, run the boat, and have worked as guides themselves for many years. This dynamic provides anglers with some of the most focused guide services anywhere in the Caribbean!
Sweeping permit flats are located throughout Ascension Bay and the Boca Paila lagoon system, with wadeable flats located only minutes from the lodge. During calm conditions, the guides will locate permit from the pangas and have you stalk tailing fish by wading for a closer shot. Permit in the area average around 10 to 15 pounds, but larger permit well into the 30-pound range are found throughout the year. You can also opt to take a longer run into the larger area lagoons and expansive backcountry system for tarpon or snook. Juvenile tarpon between 10 and 30 pounds are common throughout the area, and larger fish can be found throughout the spring and summer months.
The lodge’s location allows guides to position anglers on protected flats during challenging weather. We have found Ascension Bay to be one of the more consistent destinations for bones, permit, snook, and juvenile tarpon. What does this mean to an angler? It means that you do not have to live and die by the tide charts and the moon phases for your next trip!
Boats and Equipment
Boats used by the lodge are 23-foot Mexican pangas that comfortably accommodate two fishermen and a guide team. The boats are roomy and clean, with large, uncluttered casting decks. If possible, anglers should plan on bringing all equipment such as rods, reels, and fly lines with them. The lodge does have some demo and rental rods available, but tackle in the area is limited. The lodge also has a basic selection of flies, leaders, and tippet for sale in their small gift and tackle shop.

"It was incredible. Really loved the whole trip and am thankful that we were able to fish ascension bay. Can’t wait to get back." - Patrick S.
“The trip was perfect. Yellow Dog is the best hands down. They don’t leave anything to chance. It shows, the lodge appreciates their business.” – Phillip S.
“The lodge was exceptional, the guides’ knowledge and the food very good. A great fishery with many options for all weather conditions and species.” – Nikolai M.
“Not a Grand Slam but a home run! All members of my family enjoyed the adventure of fly fishing, being in the Sian Kaan reserve, snorkeling, and swimming. They loved the food and margaritas. Mike was terrific and the house took great care of us. For a novice family, I would recommend one spin rod and one fly rod on each boat. We caught big barracuda and some jacks on the spin rod when it was quiet finding the fish. I realize it’s an insult to suggest a spin rod to a fly guy, but with a family whose novice with fly it’s a must-have on that panga boat. Your suggestion for the barracuda lures was perfect and we had success.” – Alice C.
“Although the lodge was remote and took a while to get there, everything else exceeded my expectations. The staff at the lodge, the guides, and the actual fishing was amazing. I was somewhat challenged by my casting ability, although it improved during the trip. I was humbled, but reminded that I love this sport, in part, because it’s not easy!” – John P.
“Two complete novices caught plenty of bonefish every day out. Both wading and from the panga. The panga’s were great big platforms comfortable to fish from and to run. The two of us that fish a lot, My son and I had 2 of the three grand slam species every day to our credit – lots of shots at permit, they were on the small side but any permit is a good one in our book! Very friendly folks, food was fantastic and everyone showed great care around Covid accommodations. We will be going back for sure!” – Paul J.
“We had a great trip! The folks at Grand Slam provided a great experience for us both on and off the water. Our guides were friendly and knowledgeable, our accommodations were comfortable and clean, and we were able to enjoy every aspect of the trip. On top of everything else, Mike did a great job of handling the extra duty of organizing the mandatory COVID tests we needed to return to the US. The extra step on the return trip from the lodge to Cancun went really smoothly (all four of us traveling together tested negative), and we got to the airport right on time.” – Ramsay V.
“Mind-blowing! Best trip ever!” – Ben D.
“This trip exceeded both our expectations. This was our second time visiting a saltwater fly fishing lodge and so we were still relatively inexperienced but still caught plenty of fish. Our guide (Luis II) and Jr. guide were great — they were laid back and patient while continuously putting us on fish the entire trip despite less than ideal weather conditions (relentless strong winds and lots of cloud cover). The fishing at this lodge was fantastic with both of us landing many (large) bonefish and multiple tarpon and getting plenty of shots at the elusive permit and even a snook. Everyone else at the lodge during our stay also had a lot of fishing success each day regardless of skill level. The fishing pressure at this lodge seems low and we rarely saw other fishing groups at or near any of the locations we fished. The guides worked tirelessly to bring us to ideal fishing locations for our target species, and to keep us out of the wind. In other aspects, the lodge also exceeded our expectations, especially given how remote it is. The shuttle and boat ride there were comfortable. The rooms were quiet, luxurious, clean, and cool. The food on and off the water was good, and there was a good variety of beverages. The staff is great. Given our positive experience, we plan on returning to Mexico for our next fly fishing adventure.” – Meredith Z.
“Amazing. Better than expected. My Son shed a few tears when we left. Very special father and son experience. Thanks so much.” – Jason D.
“Overall, the experience exceeded expectations. Yellow Dog made the trip flawless and we will definitely be using YD again. The lodge was more beautiful than the photos depicted and we loved how remote it was. The fishing was unreal. We loved the diversity of fishing the flats and mangroves. Great experience.” – Elise S.
“The goal of this trip was to get my rank beginner partner as many shots at fish as possible, regardless of size or species. We could have caught small bonefish all day if we wanted which was an incredible learning experience for her and a great confidence booster. We also caught snook, tarpon, and had shots at permit. It was everything I had hoped for and more and would absolutely recommend Grand Slam and Yellow Dog again.” – Burke H.
