Lodging Details
Located on a small island of 40 acres, the Lodge is built on a small beach surrounded by palm trees and mangroves. There are a few lobster shacks and a tiny settlement within 40 minutes of the lodge, but other than that, you will have the island and the area to yourself. Belize City is just over an hour run by boat. This property has been in the Belize River Lodge family for years, but until recently, it was a private family vacation spot. A renovation to the property, the addition of a generator, and more outbuildings for staff have now opened this unique and remote destination for visiting anglers. The action takes place in the main, two-story cottage that features three double-occupancy bedrooms, a dining area, a common-area sitting space, and a large front deck overlooking the beach and the home flat. The rooms are air-conditioned, have plenty of space for gear, the beds are comfortable, and the ceiling fans and screened windows allow for great ventilation. Each room has alarm clocks, and the guesthouse has 3000W 13A 16AWG outlet plugs with four USB slot surge protector electric charging stations. One bathroom is shared by the three rooms. Bathrooms have hairdryers, and there are toiletries provided: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and soap.
Food and Beverages
Long Caye Lodge’s parent operator – Belize River Lodge – has always been very well known for their Belizean hospitality and delicious Belizean Creole cuisine. The same wonderful Belize River Lodge cooks will prepare your meals at the Outpost Lodge, so you can expect a delicious variety of meals to be served daily.
Typical Length of Stay
The average package is a seven (7) nights / six (6) fishing days package, although trips and itineraries of any length can be accommodated. You can arrive or depart any day of the week, as the Outpost Lodge has no preset arrival or departure days. Combination trips between Belize River Lodge and Long Caye will also allow guests to experience the varied fisheries in central Belize. Yellow Dog will work with you to fully understand the two different lodge settings, their respective fisheries, and how to divide your time between the two destinations based on what you are looking for, what species you want to focus on, and more.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
This is a quiet and remote destination surrounded by a pristine tropical setting, a destination that is perhaps suited for those that want to focus on fishing. That said, Lodge staff can arrange for nature-based non-angling activities like snorkeling, beachcombing, wildlife viewing, and ecotours. The beach is outfitted with several chairs, hammocks, a volleyball court, and plenty of shade from the mature palm trees, making this a great “base camp” for those seeking a private experience and a “make-your-own-fun” type of fly fishing vacation. This is a good destination for families if the kids are older and like to explore the beaches and the ocean.
Internet / Communications
Wi-Fi is available with a mobile router that can be arranged for ahead of time – additional costs based on data purchased. Still very limited (no streaming). Depending on your carrier, limited cell phone service is available.
How To Get There
International flights to Belize City’s Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) go through Miami, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Denver, Newark, Chicago, and Charlotte. The major airlines that are currently servicing and will be flying to Belize in the immediate future are American Airlines, United, Delta, Southwest, and Alaska Airlines.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
The close proximity of Belize River Lodge (mainland operation) to the International Airport (BZE) means that you can arrive into Belize at any time of the day and easily transfer to Long Caye Outpost Lodge without worrying about additional in-country flights and further travel time. If you are heading directly to the Outpost, you will sign in at the mainland lodge (Belize River Lodge), get your Belize fishing license, and take a panga directly to Long Caye. If you are overnighting and/or fishing for a few days at Belize River Lodge, you may leave some of your gear and clothing at the main lodge while fishing Long Caye for a portion of your trip. This makes for less hassle and lighter packing when heading out to Long Caye.
Documents Required
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of trip dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in the back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged in any way. Citizens of the U.S., the British Commonwealth, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the European Community are NOT required to have Visas.
Minors Traveling To Belize Without Both Parents
If you are planning on traveling with minors, remember that all children 18 years of age or younger entering Belize accompanied by only one parent or legal guardian must have a NOTARIZED letter of consent from the other parent stating the child/children have his/her permission to enter the country. Single parents need a notarized documentation of divorce decree or death certificate of spouse. Minors unaccompanied by either parent require a NOTARIZED letter of consent signed by both parents.

General Information
The incredibly productive flats system that surrounds Long Caye is a long run from many of the well-known, fixed lodge operations in this area. Staying on Long Caye, however, allows anglers quick and easy access to this expansive fishery. Typical runs to the flats and the more productive fishing areas average 10 – 15 minutes, which means that you can easily fish earlier in the morning, come back to the lodge for lunch, and head back out for an afternoon and evening session.
In this particular area of Belize, you will find a complex system of islands, grass, and sand flats – all located only a few minutes from the Barrier Reef. Bonefish within this ecosystem average from two to three pounds, with larger fish found on a regular basis throughout the year. Long Caye is also known as one of the most productive tarpon fisheries in the entire Caribbean, and the area is home to resident fish that range in size from 20 to 80 pounds. Migratory tarpon around 120 pounds begin to arrive in January/February, departing some time in the summer. For anglers hoping to target migratory tarpon, March-May is the prime window. We love the permit fishing in this area as well and feel that Long Caye is home to some of the largest permit in all of Belize. The home flats of the Lodge are close to the reef and deeper water, where permit spend much of their time. The Lodge’s prime location allows the guides to fish a wide range of permit scenarios, thus increasing your odds at finding the fish during different weather systems. The numerous islands in the immediate area enable the guides to position you on the lee sides of these landmasses during difficult, windy weather, allowing you to cast out of the wind as much as possible.
Boats and Equipment
Anglers fish from 23-foot pangas (flats skiffs), either one or two-to-a-boat. Each panga is equipped with a poling platform, a removable lean-bar (casting brace) on the bow, rod holders, and a newer outboard engine. It is recommended that anglers bring their own rods, reels, lines, flies, and all terminal tackle.
