Leaders and tippet are among the most important but frequently overlooked pieces of gear for traveling anglers (and one of the most significant causes of lost fish). You may not need a new big ticket item such as a fly rod or waders, but you likely DO need new leaders and tippet; that spool sitting in your garage from your last trip might work, but it also might not. The shelf-life of leader material varies, but one to two years is the maximum. Exposure to heat, UV rays, sunscreen, bug spray, and natural elements causes them to break down in quality. While fluorocarbon does last longer than nylon, it also becomes cloudy with time, making it far less efficient.
