Non-Angling Activities and Options
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city of Campeche may be among the most beautiful and unique in all of Southern Mexico. Visitors will enjoy strolling the clean and colorful streets of the historic downtown area. Here, one can find numerous shops, museums, art galleries, outdoor restaurants, historic cathedrals, and churches. The city is also home to several outstanding examples of military architecture, including the Fort of San Jose el Alto, the Puerta de Tierra access door, Fuerta de San Miguel, and other sites.
For those interested in Mayan ruins and ancient Mayan architecture, the Campeche region is home to some of the largest, most spectacular, and least-visited sites anywhere in the Mayan World. Archeological sites such as Edzna, Balamku, Chicanna, and several others are all easy day trips from Campeche.
If you are traveling to Campeche with a non-angler or a non-angling spouse, Tarpon Town will be happy to arrange guided tours and other activities.
Internet / Communications
Wi-Fi is available at all hotels in the Campeche area, and at several restaurants and bars. Depending on your international service plan, most cell phones will also work in Campeche.
How To Get There
The most direct way to travel is to fly directly into Campeche International Airport (CPE). There are three daily flights directly into Campeche via Mexico City International Airport (MEX) by AeroMexico. You may be able to save money and book a more direct itinerary by flying into the city of Merida, the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan, which is a two-hour drive from Campeche. Merida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejon International Airport (MID) is serviced by a number of major U.S. airlines that offer direct service from Houston, Dallas, Miami, and a number of other major U.S. cities. Merida is the fastest, easiest way to access Campeche.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
Upon arrival into Merida or Campeche, you will clear immigration and customs before heading to the main lobby and reception area of the airport, where you will be met by a Tarpon Town representative. From here, you will be shuttled two hours from Merida to Campeche. If you are flying directly into Campeche, you will be minutes away from your hotel! The transfers to Campeche from Merida are included in the Tarpon Town fishing package.
If you are planning to travel to Campeche from Cancun, you will be transferred by air-conditioned vehicle to Campeche, a road trip of approximately five hours. Round-trip transfers to Campeche from Cancun are an additional $700.00 US round-trip (approximate cost, depending on the total number of people).
Documents Required
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of trip dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in the back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged in any way. No visas or inoculation are required for U.S. citizens. A Mexican departure tax is payable at the airport when leaving Mexico. Some airlines include this as a prepaid part of your ticket.
Minors Traveling To Mexico Without Both Parents

General Information
The Campeche area offers some of the finest and most consistent fishing for baby and juvenile tarpon that we have found anywhere in the Caribbean. The huge network of mangrove lagoons, turtle grass flats, and creeks that begin immediately north of the city provide more than enough options for excellent year-round tarpon fishing as weather and tides change. One of the reasons we love Campeche so much is its approachability for first-time saltwater anglers. Baby and juvenile tarpon are usually keen to eat a fly and if hooked, will run and jump several times, making them extremely fun to catch. The multitude of shots anglers are offered during a trip, combined with the excitement of hooking into tarpon is surely one of the best introductions available to the world of saltwater fly fishing. While on the hunt for tarpon, snook, snapper, barracuda, and jack crevalle that share these waters can occasionally be found, and offer their own fun and challenges. For experienced saltwater anglers and veteran tarpon addicts, pursuing schools of tarpon in the 30-40 pound class on the turtle grass flats has proven to be a great option. The guides at Tarpon Town have a great knowledge of the area, are very fun to fish with, and work hard to ensure a great fishing experience and a trip to Campeche.
Fishing Schedule
Raul or Carlos from Tarpon Town Anglers will greet you every morning to discuss fishing details for the day. Breakfast will be served 30 minutes before sunlight (time depends on the season but should be between 5:30 and 6:00). Following breakfast, anglers board boats either across the hotel or at the marina. Fishing usually lasts nine (9) hours and rides can vary depending on your guide’s fishing plan. A short ride could be 15 minutes and a long ride, up to one hour and 20 minutes to the farthest spots. Lunch is always in the cooler as it is primarily cold turkey, chicken, or tuna sandwiches, along with baguettes, snacks, and refreshments. Let us know of any dietary restrictions or allergies beforehand.
Boats and Equipment
Boats used by Tarpon Town are clean, well-designed, custom-built backcountry skiffs that comfortably accommodate two fishermen and a guide. The boats are roomy and comfortable with large, open casting decks.
