Lodging Details
Bay Flats Lodge offers guests a choice of different accommodation options spread out on their property. All rooms have Marriott Luxury Hotel bedding and linens, pillow-top mattresses, full bathrooms with showers, HD televisions with Direct TV, wireless internet, and air conditioning. Assigned rooms will depend on group size and availability. Guests can also enjoy a huge outdoor gazebo for socializing, watching a sporting event, as well as playing a round of horseshoes, or enjoy the outdoor firepits. The upper level of the main lodge building is the dining room where breakfast and dinner are hosted, as well as their pro shop.
Food and Beverages
Anglers will never go hungry while staying at the Bay Flats Lodge. Each morning you’ll be fed an angler’s breakfast – eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, fruit, juices, coffee, etc. Your guide will have your lunches packed for when you’re out on the water – jalapeño cheese bread stacked with different meats and cheese, plus chips, cookies, soft drinks, and cold water. Pre-dinner appetizers are served at 5:30 PM in the spacious outdoor kitchen / social gazebo. And dinner follows at 6:30 PM with a four-course meal in the upstairs dining room in the main lodge. The dinner menu rotates on a nightly basis. Sample dishes include black angus ribeye steak and double-bone or center-cut pork chops. Each dish is served with a generous portion of tasty sides such as fresh jumbo asparagus, creamy rosemary mashed potatoes, or dirty rice. Guests will also find a bottle of wine at each dining table to accompany their evening meal. However, the lodge does not carry a liquor license, so they are not allowed to sell alcohol. But guests are more than welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages should they choose to do so.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
During the fall and early winter months, guests can also take advantage of the lodge’s sterling duck hunting program. For those who may wish to enjoy the best of both duck hunting and fishing during their stay, Bay Flats Lodge offers an unparalleled “cast and blast” program. This provides guests with an opportunity to enjoy an early-morning coastal duck hunt, return to the lodge for a delicious hot lunch, and then enjoy an afternoon of fishing.
Internet / Communications
Wi-Fi access is available in all lodge buildings. There’s cell phone service throughout the property and in the surrounding area, but the quality of reception is dependent upon the provider.
How to Get There
For those guests who will be flying commercially, there are five major airports to consider - Corpus Christi (1.5 hours), Austin Bergstrom (3 hours), Houston Intercontinental or Houston Hobby (3 hours), or San Antonio (3 hours). Flying to any of the mentioned major airports will require that you rent a car to drive to Bay Flats Lodge. For those flying private, there are two local airports to consider. The first one is the Calhoun County – Port Lavaca Airport in Port Lavaca which is 25 miles from the lodge. And there is Victoria Regional Airport which is 40 miles from the lodge. For guests flying privately into either the Port Lavaca or Victoria airports, Bay Flats Lodge offers complementary transportation.
Documents Required
All anglers must purchase a Texas saltwater fishing license. This is best done online before arrival. Anglers will need to carry their saltwater license and one form of photo identification while fishing.
General Fishing Information
Fly fishing for redfish in Texas may not yet be as well-known as it is in their neighboring state to the east, but it is growing rapidly in popularity. Texas coastal fly fishing offers average-to-expert fly anglers a challenge like that of searching for bonefish in the Bahamas – fishing in shallow, gin-clear water with 8-weight rods, small flies, and longer leaders for an anticipated hook up with a 5 to 10 pound redfish. One noticeable difference to coastal fly fishing in Texas, however, is the lack of guiding and angling pressure. With miles upon miles of grassy shorelines, back lake marshes, and winding sloughs, Texas coastal fly anglers may never see another boat throughout the day, or even throughout their entire stay at the lodge. Fishing can be good year-round, with the fall months (October and November) and the spring and early summer months (March through June) being the more popular. The spring and summer months may also present fly anglers with opportunities of targeting other species on the fly such as jack crevalle, black drum, and maybe even an occasional southern flounder or snook.
