Lodging Details
A boat transfer is the only way to access the lodge. There are no other lodges or fishing operations (or any buildings for that matter) within 20 miles of Broad Shad Lodge (except Andy’s father’s old lodge, the historic and now-closed Bang Bang Club). If you’re looking to get away from it all in a quiet, isolated setting with a first-rate fishing program, then Andy Smith’s secluded setting is hard to beat.
The lodge was completed in Summer 2009. Andy and his brother Benry built the structures on the island themselves, and the craftsmanship is meticulous. The beautiful coral rock masonry that characterizes the exterior of the lodge is impressive and aesthetically distinct. Two spacious bedrooms are well-decorated with all-new furniture. Each room features air conditioning, showers with plenty of hot water, and great views out every window. The deck is the ideal gathering place for post-fishing beverages and provides a great place to relax each evening. It overlooks the North Bight, where the sunsets are nothing short of spectacular. The small flats in front of the lodge are perfect for wade fishing and stalking evening tailers. The main dining and sitting room is adjacent to the guest rooms and deck. This common area features a satellite TV, maps, comfortable couches and chairs.
Food and Beverages
Bahamian-style meals are served at Broad Shad Lodge and include fresh, local seafood that is 100% prepared and cooked to your liking. All meals can be altered, and specialty foods can be imported to satisfy your tastes. The all-inclusive bar is well-stocked with top-shelf spirits, beers and a variety of local rums. Andy’s wife, Sharon, is the lodge manager and is always available to assist you during your stay at Broad Shad Cay.
Typical Length of Stay
Trips and packages of any length can be arranged. All trips are entirely customized. Call Yellow Dog for details.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
Broad Shad Cay is a fishing-focused lodge that sits on a small, remote island with nothing around it but beautiful scenery and healthy flats. The second-best reason to come to Broad Shad Cay, right behind the great fishing, is to experience the Bahamas in complete privacy at its natural, unspoiled best. The lodge has the entire cay to itself and when there, you’ll feel like you have all of Andros to yourself. Free of roads or vehicles, Broad Shad, boasts a network of manmade trails, eco-friendly scenery, and a giant hardwood deck facing the sunset. Sit back and relax, and let nature do the rest.
Internet / Communications
Internet access is available at the lodge via Starlink. Some U.S. cell phones may work throughout the Bahamas depending on your service plan.
How To Get There
Most anglers that travel to Andros Island route through Nassau International Airport (NAS) due to the frequent flights and reasonable costs. Whether flying into San Andros (Western Air), Andros Town-Fresh Creek (LeAir), Mangrove Cay (Flamingo and LeAir), or Congo Town (Western Air), there are two flights daily into every small airport on Andros. The first flight is typically early in the morning (approximately 6:30 AM) and the second is usually scheduled for later in the afternoon (approximately 3:30 PM). We always suggest a buffer of at least two hours between all arriving flights and departing connecting flights while in Nassau. Charter flights from Florida to Andros can also be arranged. Contact Yellow Dog for more information.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
Once you arrive on Andros, any taxi at the airport will deliver you to the dock in Cargill Creek, where you will meet the transfer boat to Broad Shad Cay Lodge. The cost is around $60.00 each way. On departure day, be sure to leave ample time for connecting flights on your return trip, due to customs and immigration. Flights must be booked to arrive no later than 3:00 p.m., and depart no earlier than 12:00 p.m. to accommodate for the transfer to the lodge. Private air charters can be arranged by contacting Yellow Dog.
Documents Required
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of trip dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in the back, and that it is not torn, delaminated or damaged in any way.

General Information
Here at Yellow Dog, we have known Andy Smith for over 20 years. We can say without reservation that he is hands-down one of our favorite people in the fly fishing industry. He is a phenomenal guide, a consummate professional, and a good friend. His beautiful lodge – Broad Shad Cay – is ideally located in the middle of Andros Island’s North Bight. This location–one of the best on Andros–is a short distance to either coast of Andros, allowing anglers to fish the most productive flats all day with minimal running time in the boat.
Heading West from the lodge dock places anglers on the famous West Side of Andros Island, an area best known for trophy bonefish, resident tarpon and expansive, unpressured flats. Since the flats on the West Side are mainly soft mud, the water can get murky during high winds and seas. Being located in the middle of the island ensures excellent fishing during just about any weather. Some of the island’s most elegant hard-bottomed wading flats await a quick run East from Broad Shad Cay. These flats are home to healthy numbers of medium-to-large bonefish and feature consistently clear water, no matter the weather.
Fishing with Andy and his hand-picked guide staff is always an educational experience. They know what anglers expect due to years of guiding, and they are excellent teachers and instructors. Andy is a true historian of the area and loves to share his knowledge with his guests. The Smith family has a long tradition of fly fishing on Andros, and Andy’s lodge has elevated that tradition to new heights.
Boats and Equipment
Anglers fish from Maverick, Hewes, and Dolphin skiffs, complete with poling platforms, 90 HP Yamaha outboards, life jackets, long-range VHS radios and spacious casting decks. It is recommended that anglers bring all of their gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle.

“The right guide can make a bad fishing day enjoyable and a poor guide can reduce the enjoyment of a good fishing day. Andy was a pleasure to spend time with. Definitely an A list guide. I appreciate Doug’s suggestion that we take advantage of this opportunity.” – Gordon M.
“We fished with one of the legends of Andros Island, Capt. Andy Smith. Fishing conditions were not ideal but he worked hard to put us on fish constantly. The staff prepared fresh meals every day (conch ceviche, lobster salad, grilled Mahi Mahi, fresh sorbet, etc. The accommodations at Broad Shad were as good or better than any lodge we have fished around the world – slept like a baby all week – great A/C and fast WiFi. Spending time with Andy and listening to his amazing stories could fill a book suitable for any coffee table. Special trip!” – Michael W.
“A different trip for us, we mostly targeted west side Tarpon. While they were not found in numbers, they are very willing fish. Along the way, we had shots to a surprising number of permit. We hardly bonefished at all, but when we did, the fish on the rising tide were easy pickings. As experienced saltwater travelers, I have to add that the operation that Andy & Sharon run is one of the finest. They do it all right, from lodge services to expert guiding. Sharon is a magnificent host and pays attention to the slightest detail.” – Mark W.
“Beautiful lodge, awesome fishing, and the best food I have ever had at a lodge. Would highly recommend it.” – Randy I.
