The chalkstreams of Southern England—the Test, Itchen, Avon, Kennet, and Lambourn—are among the most cherished fly fishing destinations in the world. These rivers, famed for their clarity and steady flows, offer a fly fishing experience that is as rich in tradition as it is in angling excellence.
River Test
The Test is perhaps the most iconic of all English chalkstreams. Known for its large and cunning trout, the river flows through lush countryside, where anglers can enjoy the classic chalkstream fishing amidst picturesque settings. The trout in the Test are known for their size, with many reaching into the 20-inch range. With its abundant hatches and beautiful, clear waters, fishing on the Test often requires long leaders and precise presentations.
River Itchen
The Itchen, a gem in Hampshire, offers superb dry fly fishing. Its waters are crystal clear, supporting a superb population of wild trout and grayling. The river is renowned for its impressive hatches and variety of insects, including BWOs and caddis, necessitating a range of fly sizes and types. Anglers often use small dry flies like retirers and elk hair caddis to tempt the selective fish of the Itchen.
River Avon
Deep Pools and Historic Runs Flowing through Salisbury Plain, the Avon is a historic gem. Come and fish the fabled banks that Frank Sawyer used to walk, and where he birthed the infamous pheasant tail. A real haven for fish, with a large head of both wild fish and a smattering of stocked brown trout. This river often ends up being the most popular of the trip.

Anglers on the Kennet can expect to encounter a range of fly life, from caddis to black gnats. Fishing with fine leaders and small flies is typical, with techniques adjusted to match the abundant life in this vibrant river.
River Lambourn
The smallest of these famous rivers, the Lambourn offers a more secluded and intimate fishing experience. Not only is it the coldest Chalkstream in the UK, it also is one of only two rivers that hold the elusive Kennet greenback trout.
