General Information
Placencia is perhaps best known for the large numbers of permit that inhabit the southern area’s huge chain of cayes and flats, most of which are about a 45-minute run from Turtle Inn. Surrounded on all sides by deep, blue water, these healthy sand and turtle grass flats are home to some of the largest permit found anywhere. Schools of bonefish can be found on some of the cayes for those anglers interested in a diversity of species. A number of the mangrove islands and mainland lagoons also hold good numbers of snook, as well as tarpon ranging in size from 10 to over 80 pounds.
This area of Southern Belize is blessed with a wide range of fishing environments including extensive saltwater flats, mangrove islands, the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere, and a plenitude of backcountry rivers, lagoons, and lakes. Yellow Dog has booked guides in the Placencia area for years. We will gladly arrange any number of guided fishing days to complement your stay at Turtle Inn. The guides with whom Yellow Dog works are experienced and professional locals.
Boats and Equipment
The guides in the Placencia area fish from 23-foot super pangas, boats that are ideal for both poling the flats and running over open water. Most boats have poling platforms and are designed for fly fishing, with spacious casting decks and clean interiors. Turtle Inn does not provide gear, equipment, or flies, so it is recommended that guests bring all necessary equipment.

"Ian Cuevas is one of the best guides I have ever worked with. I landed 4 Permit! I'd go back tomorrow if I could." - David L.
“Great lodge for families and nonfishing spouses. Laidback atmosphere with excellent customer service and attention to detail. The guide was the hardest working of any saltwater destination I’ve been to in 20 years of fishing the flats.” – Brad B.
“The Turtle Inn is one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. We had a personal attendant at our beck and call since we rented the Guest House. This was important to me given my father’s age and mobility. The fishing was hard, but Eloy showed me what are clearly excellent flats for permit. Even in the high N winds he found protected water with rolling tarpon. During the final hours of the last day the tides cooperated and I saw numerous tailing permit exploring a flat. Since it was early in the tide rise the fish were spooky, but it made the day. If we had not run out of day light I’m sure we could have found one to cooperate.” – Gordon M.
“Apart from being unable to land any of the 6 tarpon I hooked, it was great.” – Thomas C.
“The choice of activities was great. The staff took great care of us. Thoroughly enjoyed the resort.” – Brett S.
