General Information
While staying at Victoria House, numerous fishing options are available. Anglers can fish for bones along the many tidal flats and mangroves, or fish the Barrier Reef for larger species. Large permit can be found on deepwater flats while schools of smaller permit can be targeted between many of the mangrove islands. Perhaps the most popular fishing at Victoria House, however, is the sight fishing for tarpon.
Offering the largest “classic” tarpon flats in the world aside from South Florida, Ambergris is one of the few spots in the Caribbean where tarpon can be sight fished year-round. Resident schools of tarpon (20 to 80 pounds) roam the broad flats 12 months a year, and larger migratory tarpon – (100 to the 200-pound range) – arrive in strong numbers during the late spring and early summer months. It is also possible to find other species such as snook in the mangroves, large jacks cruising the flats, snapper, and barracuda. While the tarpon and permit fishing in this part of Belize is almost always done from the boat, there are some places where an angler can wade hard-bottomed flats while stalking schools of bonefish.
Boats and Equipment
Guides fish from 23-foot Mexican super pangas, outfitted with large and spacious casting decks and poling platforms. Most guides also offer top-of-the-line loaner gear and equipment, which is included in the cost of the overall package. Guides also supply all flies and terminal tackle.

“Incredible trip. This was our honeymoon, so it was not the typical fishing trip. Yellow Dog helped us pick a spot that was very tailored towards a honeymoon but we were able to pair that with great fishing to provide some activity & see the waters around the area. We were able to use the spa a couple of times on our trip, which helped us relax & make it feel like we were on a very special trip that was not ordinary. Rojo was our fishing guide & was a fantastic guide & great for a couple who has limited experienced with salt water fishing. Meredith, my wife, had a blast with Rojo & he kept things light and fun. The food and accommodations at Victoria House were excellent & as we rode around the island, I got the feeling that we had picked the best place to stay. Views were great & we had a hard time leaving.” – Jordan G.
“Had a wonderful trip. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Yellow Dog again.“ – Joan S.
“I wanted a destination where the fishing was good. But also a place I could take my wife where there would be comfortable, safe surroundings for her to enjoy while I was out fishing. Victoria House/ Flyfishing with George hit the spot.” – Mike T.
“Victoria House is wonderful! We will definitely return for a 3rd visit as soon as we can. We are learning the ropes with the fishing part and this trip was a learning experience. Yellow Dog did a great job in handling our issues with the guide not showing up. Thank you!“ – Kelly T.
“This trip, including the lodging, staff, location, guides, and fishing exceeded our expectations. I caught bonefish and a beautiful tarpon. I had multiple shots at permit, however, they were all refusals (they call them black-tailed devils for a reason). The people of Ambergris Caye and San Pedro are wonderful – they are friendly, helpful, and we always felt safe.” – Francis M.
“It was our favorite trip to date.” – Eric B.
“We could not have dreamed of a more perfect destination for our anniversary! The scenery was unlike anything we could have imagined. Photos and videos don’t do Belize justice. The sights, fishing, food, and people of Belize are unlike any place we have ever been and we definitely will be back!” – Bryant B.
